No surprise

Last month U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales made a major speech in New Orleans addressing the serious gang problem there and elsewhere in the country. For any state or national authorities to be surprised at the violence that erupted in New Orleans in the wake of Katrina is inexcusable. Indeed, everything that's unfolded so tragically this week in NOLA was predictable: from the failure of the levees to the inability of 100,000 mostly impoverished people to leave to the city's downward spiral into violence. To quote a friend who fled New Orleans and now reports tragic news from his circle of friends, "There are no words."
