United Way NWLA

An email from United Way in Shreveport-Bossier City ------- Our Local Agencies are Working Together: Yesterday afternoon United Way of NWLA and Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier convened a meeting of the major non-profit organizations and state agencies currently serving or with the potential to serve the hurricane evacuees in northwest Louisiana. As a group we identified resources and needs, and are working to coordinate our activities and maximize our resources. This disaster is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. Need Assistance/Shelter The Louisiana Department of Socials Services has designated 211 as the first source for information on shelter and volunteering. This information is being promoted statewide. • Call 211 from any land line. The calls will be directed to the regional call center. • From a cell phone call 1-800-749-2673 • The 211 Call Centers will be operational from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week • In Shreveport the regional center is Centerpoint (the non-profit agency, not the gas company.) The local manager is Henry Bass (318) 227-2100, CELL (318) 766-1524. To Volunteer If you or an organization you are involved with want(s) to volunteer, call 211. Identify your group, the number of volunteers available and the skills or types of service they are willing to / can provide. 211 will match your resources with needs of local organizations. Types of volunteers needed statewide: State agencies will need: -- DHH needs volunteers with medical experience, doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists. -- Wildlife and fisheries needs people with boats Other volunteers needed to assist in rescue and recovery: -- We need certified first responders, EMT, coast guard Donations for food, clothing and shelter Shelter assistance Assistance with receiving, sorting and distributing donations Want to Donate Food or Goods in NWLA?
